Hosts file not working in OS X Lion 10.7.2 (Fixed)

After upgrading to OSX Lion 10.7.2, I found that the hosts file no longer worked as expected. I have several entries in my hosts file for local development domains of my sites, i.e; I use 'itnonsense.lcl' as an alias for this site.

After updating Lion, I was getting DNS resolution errors which meant that without workarounds I couldn't get my local domains to work correctly - until now. Fortunately, it is quite an easy fix.

Using a text editor such as TextWrangler, open the hosts file using 'sudo', for example:

Trying out a Standing Desk

Since turn of 2001, I've found that sitting for prolonged periods of time causes me to get pain in my abdomen.  There are medical reasons for this, but I won't go into details here.  Needless to say, my chosen profession means I spend 90% of my working day in front of a computer screen and up until now that's meant sitting down.

MAC Codes: Should it really still be this difficult?

Recently I made the decision that I was going to stop all my services from Sky, primarily because I am no longer prepared to pay extra for TV channels that I don't watch, and 99% of those I do are now available on Freesat.  I bought a Humax Freesat HD+ Recorder, tested it would work OK, and called Sky to cancel my services.

As well as TV, Sky provided my telephone and broadband services and I have been generally happy with the company over the last 5 years or so.  However, I decided that I would swap all my telephone services back to BT so I could get my broadband from BT Infinity which has become available in my area in the last few months.

ITnonsense site launch

In the past I've written several different blogs, but each time I've produced a mix of IT and non-IT related articles which never really felt like they were dedicated to any particular subject.   In amongst the web development posts were my thoughts on a recent football match or any other subject which was important to me at the time.  As a result, the blogs never really took off, and eventually fizzled out.

In 2011, one of my goals is to dedicate some time to writing about each of the subjects I'm passionate about. ITnonsense will be dedicated to my specific IT interests, namely web development, social media and enterprise infrastructure and other experiences with IT.  I hope you find it useful.
